The Cardinals jumped out two a 2-0 lead but the Maple Leafs scored two of their own in the bottom of the first inning and went on to a 6-3 victory at Christie Pits. The win moves Toronto to within a game of the title, and also improved their home record this season to 22 wins and no losses.
Toronto starter Dave Steffler shook off a first inning that saw him give up two runs on four hits to earn the win. He only gave up one run on one hit the rest of the way, striking out eleven and walking none. John Lockwood came on in the eighth and threw two scoreless and hitless innings.
Hamilton�s two runs in the top of the first came on RBI singles from Jeremy Walker and Shayne Ridley, but Toronto countered with an RBI groundout by Sean Travers and a solo home run by Rich Butler.
The Maple Leafs added two more runs in the third as Travers and Rob Butler scored on a pair of wild pitches by Cardinals starter Greg Hawkins. The other Toronto runs came on a Jason Corrigale solo home run in the fourth and a Gamon Teague sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The other Hamilton run came on an Andy Steeds solo home run in the sixth inning. Hawkins gave up six runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked five.
Toronto can complete a sweep of the Championship Series with a win in Hamilton Tuesday night. Game time has been moved to 8:00 from the original start time of 7:30.
