Hamilton Cardinals Announce Off-Field Signings

Brian E. Hanson, President of Cardinals Baseball is pleased to announce the following managerial and coaching appointments for the fast approaching 2002 Major Inter County Baseball Season.

Dean Castelli, 30, has been appointed Manager for the 2002 season. Dean is a nine year playing veteran of the Inter County Major League, five with Hamilton Cardinals and four with the Brantford Red Sox, primarily as a 1st baseman, and 3rd Baseman and with service as a DH and RHP. In 1993, the General Managers of the ICMBL chose Dean the ICMBL �Rookie of the Year�. Dean attended St.Clair College in Port Huron, Michigan on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. At St.Clair College, he earned �All Conference� all-star honors as a 1st baseman and pitched a bit as well. Dean is a Hamilton Mahoney Park product and was a member of Mahoney�s 1987 Canadian Silver Medalist team. In 1989, Dean played for Team Ontario (under 18 team) who were Silver Medalists in the Canadian Championships. In 1989 and 1990, Dean was added to the Windsor Selects Canadian Gold Winners Juvenile team as a 3rd baseman. Dean currently lives in the Stoney Creek mountain area of Hamilton and is employed in security at Copps Coliseum. He also teaches baseball skills and fundamentals at the Cardinals Baseball Schools in the winter. He may be reached at 905 561 2599.

Rejoining the Cardinals after a three-year absence is Dean Dicenzo, 41, an all time ICMBL great. Dean�s function with the Cardinals will be as part time bench coach to aid Manager Castelli as need be. Dean played in the ICMBL for 20 years and retired in 1998 as manager of the Hamilton Cardinals. He remains in the top 5 life time for games played, hits and stolen bases and in the top 10 life time for triples and walks and accumulated a .298 batting average and earned all star ratings at 1st base, 2nd base and as an OF. Three times Dean led the ICMBL in stolen bases. Dean also coaches a tyke rep team at East Mountain Baseball Association as well as the McMaster University baseball team. Dean is a product of Hamilton Mahoney Park and as a teenager received consideration from the Montreal Expos. Dean and wife Marlene live in the East Mountain area of Hamilton with their two baseball-playing sons, Damon and Marcus. Dean is employed as a rep for Frito Lay and teaches at the Cardinals Baseball Schools in the winter. He may be reached at 905 574 0627.

Schroeder Nicholls, 31, a Cardinal mainstay at the 3rd base coaches box since 1994 is returning for another season as the 3rd base coach. Schroeder also teaches at the Cardinals Baseball Schools during the winter specializing in pitching instruction for the past 9 years as well as an Associate Scout with the Toronto Blue Jays for the past 3 years. Year 2000 was a big year for Schroeder as he coached the McMaster University baseball team, went to spring training with the Blue Jays as a guest coach, coached the Junior team at East Mountain to a Provincial A Championship and was chosen �Manager of the Year� in the Junior ICBL. Schroeder is a Hamilton Eastwood Baseball Association product and played senior baseball in the Central Ontario Baseball Association with Bloor. Schroeder is employed in Primary Production at Dofasco and live in Hamilton�s North End area. He may be reached at 905 745 7705.

Last but not least is Terry Steeves, 66, returning for his 3rd year as the Cardinal first base coach. Terry has been involved in baseball in various capacities for over 51 years. At 20 years of age, he was signed as a catcher by the Cleveland Indians and spent 3 and a half years playing in their minor system and another year and a half in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor system. He then caught in the old Quebec Provincial League for 5 years, which at the time was rated as an AA caliber league. Somewhere along the way he dressed for 5 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates major league club. After retiring as a player, Terry coached and managed in Quebec in their elite leagues for over 10 years. Upon moving to Toronto, he coached 1st base for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the ICMBL for 18 years and has scouted for the Montreal Expos and California Angels for over 20 years. Terry lives in Don Mills - Toronto and is an Insurance Broker. Terry is a five time grand father with a daughter and grand children living in Hamilton. He may be reached at 416 444 6462.
