Kitchener Panthers 9, Stratford Storm 3

In Kitchener, Luke Baker was three-for-five with a double and a home run to power the Kitchener Panthers to a 9-3 win over the Stratford Storm in the Intercounty Baseball League on Sunday.

Jeff Pietraszko also homered and Jamie Pietraszko and Mark Johnston each added two hits in the win.

Ron Sweeney (1-0) tossed two hitless innings of relief after starter Brad Hagedorn allowed two runs in three innings. Mark Schmidt finished the game by striking out five of the final seven batters.

Kevin McKnight (0-2) gave up seven runs - five earned - and nine hits in seven innings.

Mike Alati had three hits for Stratford.

In London, John Boom belted a three-run home run in the third inning that gave the London Majors a 6-2 win over the Oshawa Dodgers in the first game of a doubleheader.

Boom also singled and Pete Babcock doubled and scored two runs.

Mike Mitro (4-3) went the distance for London, giving up two runs and six hits while Matt Tosoni (2-3) took the loss after allowing six runs and nine hits in six innings.

Pat Tobin was two-for-three with a double and drove in a run for Oshawa.

Kevin MacDonald scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to help London to a 5-4 win in the second game.

Boom hit a run-scoring double in the sixth inning and Babcock had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a run.

Kevin Virtue (4-4) allowed one run and one hit in three innings of relief for starter Jeremy Middleton, who gave up three runs and five hits in four innings.

Adam Clarke (1-5) took the loss after surrendering five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Tim Smith was two-for-three and scored two runs for Oshawa.

In Toronto, Rich Butler belted a two-run homer in the first inning to pace the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 12-8 win over the Barrie Baycats.

Dan Gibbons had three hits, including a home run, and Damon Topolie singled and drove in two runs.

Chris Rauth (2-1) gave up five runs - four earned - and seven hits in six innings.

Cam Newitt (1-1) allowed six runs and seven hits across four innings for Barrie.

Toby Legace had three hits and drove in two runs and Mike Cart smacked a two-run single in the first inning.

Raul Borjas had a pair of singles and scored two runs and Len Elias and John Mariotti each had two hits and drove in two runs in the win.

Stefan Strecker improved to 5-2 by holding Hamilton to four runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.

Mark Schuurman (1-1) was tagged for 12 runs - four earned - and 13 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Shayne Ridley had two singles and scored a run and Andy Steeds added a pair of singles for Hamilton.
