Hamilton Thunderbirds are Flying

Hamilton, OntarioMel Oswald, CEO of the Canadian Thunderbirds Elite Baseball Club announced today that he along with three other Hamilton businessmen have officially purchased the Hamilton Cardinals franchise of the Intercounty Major Baseball League.

We are very excited about this acquisition because it allows us to complete the circle for our players. Now our graduating and college players will have somewhere to play after they complete their tenure with our Elite program in the CEBC (Canadian Elite Baseball Conference), said Oswald.

We (Thunderbirds) started with one team in 1996, and since then we have grown to 10 with this latest acquisition. The Thunderbirds organization has two 14 and under teams, a Junior (16 and under) team, an Intermediate (17 and under) and two Senior teams (18 and 19 and under) plus the Intercounty team. We also sponsor four minor Ontario Baseball Association teams in the Greater Hamilton Area.

Oswald said that all indications are that everyone is very supportive and welcomes the transition of ownership.

In addition to changing the name of the Cardinals Intercounty club to the Hamilton Thunderbirds several improvements will be made to the park facilities.

New uniforms are being designed. The colours for the home uniforms will be Navy and Notre Dame Gold on a White background, and Notre Dame Gold and White on a Navy background for the away uniforms.

We have a lot of innovative and exciting plans for the future. After having purchased the Cardinals and re-naming it the Thunderbirds we are ready to start inviting player prospects to tryout for the new club. Players must keep in mind, that those who are from other territories possibly will require releases from their respective Junior or Senior programs, said Oswald. Tryouts for the new Hamilton Thunderbirds will be conducted during the winter at the Canadian Thunderbirds indoor facilities and as soon as the weather breaks will continue outdoors until the start of the season.

A press conference introducing future plans for the Hamilton Thunderbirds, promotions, special events, as well as the General Manager, Manager and Coaches will take place on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at Philthy McNastys Bar and Grill on Upper James Street in Hamilton. Fans are invited to attend.
