Toronto Maple Leafs 4, Barrie Baycats 1

In Toronto, Danny Gibbons had two hits and drove in a run to lead the Maple Leafs to a 4-1 win over the Barrie Baycats in the Leafs home opener at Christie Pits on Sunday.

Gibbons' RBI double keyed a four-run sixth inning for the Leafs, who trailed 1-0 after five innings with former baseball greats Harman Killebrew, Cito Gaston, Ferguson Jenkins, Luis Tiant and Ralph Kiner in attendance.

Paul Spoljaric went five innings for the Leafs, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Reliever Yole Reina (1-0) got the win with two hitless innings, striking out two and walking one. Chris Rauth finished the game with his first save.

Angus Roy went five shutout innings for the Baycats, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Casey Virtue (0-1) went two innings of relief, allowing four runs � just one earned � on three hits.

Hamilton Thunderbirds 14, Stratford Storm 7

In Hamilton, Geoff Allen hit a pair of doubles and a solo home run to pace the Thunderbirds to a 14-7 win over the Stratford Storm in their home opener.

Mark McDonald doubled and scored three runs and Marcel Champagnie belted a run-scoring triple in the win after former Toronto Blue Jays' great Tony Fernandez threw out the ceremonial opening pitch.

Bill Lawrence (1-0) went three innings for Hamilton, giving up one run and three hits and Steve Reiss picked up the save in relief.

Dallas Pearson doubled and drove in three runs for Stratford after starter Takayoshi Mori (0-1) was tagged for nine runs - including seven in the first inning - and nine hits in 2 1/3 innings.
