IBL Playoff Update - Sunday August 7

Toronto Maple Leafs 2, Kitchener Panthers 0

In Toronto, the Leafs opened their Intercounty Baseball League semi-final series against the Kitchener Panthers with a 2-0 win on Sunday behind the three-hit, complete game pitching from veteran Paul Spoljaric (3-0). The win was Toronto�s fifth consecutive in the playoffs and 19th in a row.

Danny Gibbons� solo home run in the fifth inning off losing pitcher Adam Hummell (0-1) proved to the game winner.

Shayne Ridley and Nildo Puertas each had two hits for Toronto. Puertas drove in the second Toronto run in the eighth inning with a single.

Spoljaric struck out nine and walked three. Hummell went seven innings and allowed just one run on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Bryon Bell came on in the eighth inning and finished up.

Barrie Baycats 3, Guelph Royals 1

In Barrie, the Baycats rebounded with a 3-1 win to tie their semi-final series 1-1.

Jonathan Baksh�s second hit of the game, a one-out run-scoring single in the eighth inning, proved to be the game winner. Baksh also added a double earlier in the game. Ryan Spataro also singled, stole two bases and scored a run for Barrie.

Ted Drew-Smith had two hits including a double and Sean Reilly homered in the second inning to the pace the Royals.

Winning pitcher Angus Roy (2-0) allowed only four hits while walking two and striking out one in going the distance.

Brian Barr (0-1) also went the route for Guelph, allowing six hits, three runs (only two earned) and just two walks with eight strikeouts.
