IBL Playoff Update - Thursday August 18
Toronto Maple Leafs 5, Barrie Baycats 1
In Toronto, Paul Spoljaric threw a complete game six-hitter and struck out 11 as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Barrie Baycats 5-1 in the opening game of the Intercounty Baseball League Championship Series Thursday night at Christie Pits.
Spoljaric didnt walk a batter and pitched out of several jams in a dominating effort to help the Maple Leafs take the opener of the title series for the Jack and Lynne Dominico Trophy.
Game two in the best-of-seven championship series will be played Saturday in Barrie at 7 p.m. Game three in the series is back at Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m.
Spoljaric was locked in a pitchers duel with Angus Roy tied 1-1 until the seventh, when Matt Logans RBI double put the Leafs ahead for good. Nildo Puertas followed with a run-scoring single to make it 3-1.
Toronto got some insurance in the eighth on back-to-back solo homers by Gamin Teague and Damon Topolie off Barrie reliever Casey Virtue.
Logan put Toronto ahead with a run-scoring groundout in the third but the Baycats tied the game on an RBI single by Josh Matlow in the fourth.
The Leafs had 15 hits in the game, with Joe Colameco pacing the attack with three singles and a sacrifice. Danny Gibbons, Teague, Topolie, Carl Embro and Shayne Ridley all had two hits for the Leafs.
Jordan Lundberg scored once and had one of Barries six hits.
Spoljaric is now 5-0 in the post-season for the Leafs. Roy took the loss, going seven innings and allowing three runs on 12 hits with one strikeout and two walks.
